Who will be sacrificed to balance the books

Who will be sacrificed when the chips are down?
Will you take from the sick and the injured the little they have to lose?
Will the enemy goose-step his way to cooking your goose
As you prepare for war – against your own?

Who will be sacrificed when you mete out the money?
When you pick out which children deserve to be fed,
How will you pick out the ones to send hungry to bed
In the land of milk and honey?

Who will be sacrificed when you settle the scales?
When you balance the books, tick the targets, who will you step on?
Is a think tank a sufficiently heavy weapon,
Or will you need to melt wheelchairs for bullets and rails?

Who will be sacrificed for you to stay in your post,
Be the power behind the polls, in a clique behind closed doors?
Who will become your scapegoat, to go with your stalking horse?
Will it be those with the least, to placate the ones with the most?

Every bully needs a target, every bigot needs a victim,
Everyone can kick a cripple or be cruel to a freak,
Everyone can punch down on someone they see as weak.
No one stands up for the broken, that's exactly why you've picked them.

Blessed be the warmongers, so peacemakers aren't needed.
Blessed be mercy killing – so much cheaper than care.
When your Christian Minister takes from those with nothing to spare,
Let him not think of the camel that goes through the eye of the needle.

Who will be sacrificed? Who will take the fall
Amid sanctimonious speeches of service and working people?
When the torturous bell tolls from the weathercocked steeple,
Ask not for whom the bell tolls. It tolls for you all.
