Earth’s Follies – Week 19: No Kings, no clarity, and definitely no class

No Kings, no flags to be placed on Mars as we have our own, with flagpoles, and definitely no gold phones, thank you very much

Greetings once again, dear Earthlings. It’s been a rather combustible week on your little blue planet, where irony and indignity continue to do the cha-cha across your political stage. The United States, or as we now call it, the Formerly United States of Emotional Stability, has delivered yet another spectacular episode in its ongoing telenovela, ‘Democracy: But Make It Dictatorship-Lite‘.

Let us begin, as always, with the Sovereign of Shenanigans, Donald J Trump.

A parade of pity and patriotism (but mostly pity)

Trump’s big, beautiful military parade took place this week and, much like his promises of universal health care, Mexico paying for walls, and returning ‘dignity’ to the presidency, it was… underwhelming.

The crowd? Sparse. Think less ‘mass gathering of national pride’ and more ‘awkward queue for a food truck outside a failing state fair’. Even the tanks seemed embarrassed to be there, with one squeaking its way down the avenue like a supermarket trolley with a dodgy wheel. Martians, who’ve mastered silent hovercrafts, were both baffled and delighted by the slapstick spectacle.

Then came the soundtrack which hilariously included Fortunate Son by Creedence Clearwater Revival. A protest song. About the Vietnam War. Played at full volume to celebrate a man who famously dodged that very war due to alleged bone spurs. We’re still trying to determine whether the irony was accidental, weaponised, or simply the result of someone on Team Trump googling ‘songs with flag in them’ and calling it a day.

Given the number of actual military personnel present, we Martians are frankly surprised Trump didn’t sprout a fresh pair of bone spurs on the spot – a biological defence mechanism to avoid proximity to service. And while he saluted from his overly festooned perch, at one point it genuinely looked as though he had nodded off – chin slumped, eyes closed, the unmistakable posture of a man who finds nap time more engaging than national defence.

To make matters worse (or better, depending on your appetite for absurdity), Trump is reportedly furious that the troops were enjoying themselves. Some were spotted smiling, waving to the sparse crowd, and generally behaving like human beings – a far cry from the steely, goose-stepping show of authoritarian might he’d envisioned. It’s as though the real offence wasn’t the squeaky tank but the sound of morale.

In short: the optics flopped, the symbolism backfired, and the only thing on parade more inflated than the flags was Trump’s ego.

Which leads us neatly to…

No Kings, Just Clowns: the global rebellion

In response to Trump’s increasingly monarchic tendencies – the gold-plated everything, the self-congratulatory flags, the lust for military parades – a global rebellion erupted under the banner of “No Kings.” It spread faster than one of Trump’s typo-riddled late-night tirades, mobilising millions in cities across the United States and around the globe. From New York to London, San Francisco to Berlin, crowds filled the streets with a singular message: America didn’t ditch one King just to be ruled by another one with a spray tan and a Social Media addiction.

Banners were as creative as they were furious.

Our personal favourite was the elegantly direct: ‘Morons Are Governing America‘ A close second was the rather pointed: ‘No Kings, Just Clowns’ (frankly, we Martians are considering printing this one on diplomatic merchandise)

The tone was defiant, humorous, and gloriously human. It was, in all seriousness, a rare moment of global unity – one not forged by treaties or trade deals, but by collective exhaustion. A planet weary of authoritarian cosplay, dynastic delusions, and one man’s relentless effort to remake democracy in his own image… which, to be fair, is mostly gold, loud, and vaguely collapsing.

We Martians watched with a peculiar mix of admiration and concern. Admiration, because it turns out Earthlings can still rally around fundamental ideals. Concern, because we’ve now had to create an entirely new interstellar risk category: ‘Planetary Rebellion Against Unelected Monarchs‘.

We even considered sending a diplomatic envoy holding a banner of solidarity – although our translation of ‘Get in the bin’ into Intergalactic Common accidentally reads as “Rehome yourself in refuse,” which doesn’t quite carry the same punch.

Still, the message was clear: No Kings. No crowns. No gilded thrones propped up by conspiracy theories and discount patriotism. Just a planet’s worth of people saying: ‘We’re not doing this again’.

The G7, the Great Escape, and the flagpole compensation scheme

Just as Earth’s most powerful leaders settled in for their annual G7 summit – all faux camaraderie, forced chuckles, and passive-aggressive pastry sharing – Trump abruptly exited stage right. Officially, he was ‘urgently needed’ back in Washington to ‘attend to urgent matters.’ Unofficially? He most likely wanted to supervise the erection of ‘big, beautiful flag poles’ on the White House lawn. Because nothing says global leadership like abandoning discussions on climate, AI, and security to play patio decorator-in-chief with 90-foot metallic monuments to overcompensation.

Of course, there’s speculation he fled not for his flag fetish, but to avoid Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who arrived armed with memories of the ‘perfect phone call’ extortion debacle and a desire to talk hard truths. That’s awkward when your foreign policy playbook contains only tweets, tantrums, and dictator cuddles.

We Martians observed with the usual mix of confusion and concern. Confusion, because it’s hard to hold interstellar summits when your planet’s emissary thinks NATO is a type of soup. Concern, because he may soon start replacing embassies with lawn ornaments. In summary: while the world debated existential threats, Trump ran home to plant his flag – and avoid another international incident he didn’t understand. We await next week, when he’ll likely mistake the UN for a garden centre and unveil a line of MAGA hedge trimmers ‘for global peace’.

Senator Padilla: removed for asking a question

In news that perfectly encapsulates this dystopian remake of The West Wing, Senator Alex Padilla of California was handcuffed by federal agents this week. His crime? Asking a question. In public. To a government official.

Apparently, democracy is now so fragile that even inquiries pose a threat. We Martians will be updating our Earthling Dictionary shortly:

Democracy (noun): A political system where elected officials are arrested for doing their jobs while unelected billionaires do whatever they like, such as launching cars into space.

ICE’s new target: NYC Mayoral Candidate

Not content with terrorising immigrants and families, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) decided to arrest New York City mayoral candidate and comptroller Brad Lander. Yes, you read that correctly. Political opponents are now being detained ahead of elections.

We had to double-check our Earth History Scrolls to ensure this wasn’t a retelling of early 20th-century fascist regimes. Alas, no. It’s just Tuesday in Trump’s America. Brad Lander  was escorting a defendant out of immigration court. So naturally, he became an immediate threat to national security – or at least to the fragile egos in the West Wing cosplay club.

A deal with who now?

At a press conference this week, Trump triumphantly declared he had just signed a historic new trade deal ‘with the European Union’. Except… he hadn’t.

The agreement was with the United Kingdom – who, in case anyone forgot (including the person signing the paperwork), is no longer in the EU. A minor detail, unless you happen to be a head of state. Or someone who passed Year 9 geography.

We Martians would mock this further, but we fear the sheer density of ignorance might collapse into a black hole and suck us all in.

Musk’s magical drug test

Elon Musk – still doing his very public imitation of a midlife crisis with a rocket launcher – released the results of a drug test this week, allegedly proving he is as clean as a new Tesla showroom.

Given that the man has admitted to “medical” ketamine use and posts like someone who’s been up for 48 hours watching conspiracy videos about AI overlords, the results were met with a collective planetary eyebrow raise.

We Martians compared them to Trump’s latest physical exam, which declared him “in excellent health” despite the fact that his diet consists almost entirely of Diet Coke and what we believe you call ‘Big Macs’. Truly, human science is a wondrous, pliable thing.

Elon: from rocket launcher to misfire merchant

And while we’re on the subject of everyone’s favourite chainsaw-wielding megalomaniac – the one who once declared intentions to colonise my planet as if it were a fixer-upper in need of a Tesla charging station – I must report, with growing amusement, that his trajectory continues to wobble.

Having already proven unable to keep his rocket up (we’re still referring to the spacecraft, though the metaphors are increasingly interchangeable), Elon has now progressed to failing to even shoot his load in the first place. Yes, dear Earthlings, his most recent attempt to conquer the skies went out with a premature fiery bang – quite literally.. He’s gone from SpaceX to Space… meh.

Frankly, we Martians are beginning to lose any lingering concern that he’ll succeed in invading our red-soiled homeland. At this rate, he’ll need a satnav, three tow trucks, and a reality show deal just to breach low orbit. Still, we wish him all the best in his continuing efforts to mistake ambition for aptitude.

The Trump phone: 100% more gold

Not content with plastering his name on steaks, water bottles, and failure, Trump has now unveiled the Trump Smartphone. It is, of course, gold. With his initial on it. Specifications probably include: pre-installed Truth Social, a selfie mode that applies a flattering orange filter, and a security feature that locks the phone every time someone says “facts.”

We expect it will come with a ringtone that’s just Trump shouting ‘It’s a beautiful thing!’ and ‘Fake News!’ on a loop.

Les Misérable-In-Chief

Finally, in a bit of theatrical karma so satisfying it made Martian orchestras play themselves backwards, Trump attended a performance of Les Misérables at the Kennedy Centre… and was booed by the audience.

Now, we understand the man’s cultural comprehension is slightly south of your average house plant, but Les Misérables? A show about poverty, revolution, and the fight against corrupt authority? Was he expecting a musical about trickle-down economics?

Sources close to Trump say he ‘loves’ the show. We suspect he just misheard the title and thought it was about his voter base.

Final reflections from the Red Planet

So here we are once more, watching Earthlings spin further into their whirlpool of ego, error, and apparently golden smartphones. Your leaders misquote treaties, your billionaires flunk the sniff test, and your citizens are arrested for daring to speak.

But amidst it all, millions are still marching, booing, questioning, and reminding each other that no king – not even one with flagpoles and parade envy – can silence the crowd forever.

Keep marching, Earthlings. The universe is watching. And we Martians are still taking notes – partly for diplomatic purposes, mostly for the sitcom rights.

Until next week,
