Earth’s Follies – Week 15: Trump 2.0 and the Orange-tinged Apocalypse

A Martian greeting from the holiday resort on Deimos, where the baths are more refreshing than your Earth’s Follies have been!

Greetings from Deimos, where I had hoped to take a break from the circus you call politics, sip on a cocktail or two whilst I bathe in -50C waters – but oh no you Earthlings just wont stop your insanity. As Earth stumbles through Month Five of the Trump 2.0 debacle, we Martians are left speechless – and not in the good way. From territorial tantrums to economic egg-splosions, the orange enigma continues to churn out a spectacle of chaos, absurdity, and completely unnecessary rebranding. So as I sit here pondering whether there is life on the distant asteroid I can see, I thought a recap of what in the Saturn Moons has been going on would be prudent. Buckle up as it’s been bumpy my friends.

Red, White, and Blueland

In what can only be described as ‘diplomacy with a side of hubris’, Trump has set his sights on Greenland. The icy expanse – clearly not as warm as Florida –  was possibly to be renamed ‘Red, White, and Blueland’ in an audacious attempt to slap the American brand onto foreign soil. This follows the Trump tradition of renaming anything and everything to suit his ego, much like his golf courses.

On Mars, we’ve floated the idea of calling Earth ‘Blue, White, Green, and Absolutely Drenched in Orange Land’ – a tribute to Earth’s ecosystem and to the most bewildering hue of its most infamous leader.

Super Bowl shenanigans & fiscal fireworks

The Trump Super Bowl saga is the gift that keeps on giving. The bill for his extravagant appearance? A cool $18 million. In return, Earth got a few forced waves, some awkward photos, and a boast about it being the most ‘glorious reception in sporting history’ – which is either satire or just Trump on a Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Gulf of Mexico has been renamed the Gulf of America, because clearly geography is now just another branding opportunity. In response, our Martian cartographers have christened the Pacific the ‘Trump Ego Sea’ – vast, unpredictable, and deeply questionable.

Cabinet of curiosities

The Trump 2.0 Cabinet could give even the most bizarre sci-fi novels a run for their money. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. – once an environmental advocate and vocal critic of Trump – joined the administration. This political somersault was less a pivot and more a whiplash-inducing collision. The Kennedy family must be spinning so fast in their graves that they’ve created a renewable energy source.

Meanwhile, the Department of Government Efficiency – or DOGE (yes, really) – is a masterclass in ineptitude. In what resembles an intergalactic game of musical chairs, Earthlings reported it’s run by multiple people, none of whom seem to know what they’re doing.

Economic fantasies and egg-aggerations

Trump’s economic acumen deserves special mention. In one of his fiscal fantasies, he blamed Joe Biden for the soaring price of eggs. Yes, you read that correctly – we Martians half except the President of the United States to put out some late night rant about the price of inflation being a direct result of Biden’s secret chicken empire or some such nonsense.

Equally astonishing, his proposal that Ukraine should repay military aid with half its resources in perpetuity was so imperial even our ethics committee winced. Not to be outdone, hes also claimed Ukraine started the war with Russia – because when history is inconvenient, one simply rewrites it with a Sharpie.

Social scandals and pool parties

In an embarrassing display, Trump partied with Mike Tyson and Russell Brand. On Mars, we screen our party guests; on Earth, scandal seems to be a VIP pass.

As if that weren’t enough, Elon Musk – Earth’s walking PR disaster – tweeted a ‘riot photo’ from Birmingham that turned out to be from The Dark Knight Rises. No correction was made, of course, because who needs facts when you’ve got a Twitter account and a thirst for chaos?

Zelenskyy the ‘dictator’ and other ironies

In one of the week’s more surreal turns, Trump labelled Ukrainian President Zelenskyy a dictator – this from the man who attempted to overthrow an election. The irony is so dense that even Martian probes struggle to penetrate it. Earthlings appear incapable of distinguishing between dictatorship and national defense. Perhaps what they need isn’t new glasses, but an entirely new moral compass.

Billionaire baby boom and undead pensions

As if things weren’t strange enough, Elon Musk has decided to further destabilise Earth’s gene pool by fathering yet another child – the count now nearing ‘statistical anomaly’.

Meanwhile, the deceased – particularly those receiving pensions – are somehow alive and well in Earth’s bureaucratic records. Martian researchers confirm these pensioners are not, in fact, undead; it’s simply a perfect storm of incompetence and corruption.

The Signal leak and the bourbon bungle

In military news, Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth – part conspiracy theorist, part whisky enthusiast – managed to leak details of the Yemen bombings by accidentally inviting a journalist into a group chat.

This did not, as one might expect, spark global outrage. Instead, it inspired our own Martian leaks initiative, cheekily titled WhiskeyLeaks. If your war strategy is being crowd-sourced in a Signal group led by someone whose go-to coping mechanism is an endless supply of bourbon, well, it might be time to reevaluate your hiring protocols.

American defense now suffers from trust issues worse than Hegseth’s hangovers. This isn’t just embarrassing – it’s a flashing neon sign to the rest of the galaxy: never entrust nuclear secrets to someone who thinks ‘breaking news’ means a ‘whiskey break’.

Elon Mars and the great delusion

Elon Musk, Earth’s most flamboyant Martian-wannabe, has promised yet again to send humans to Mars by 2029.

Two quick observations from your celestial neighbours:

  1. Humans can barely manage commercial flights without sparking panic.
  2. Musk’s rockets resemble firework finales more than interstellar vehicles.

If the first human footprint on Mars is anything like his test launches, we’ll all be in space suits, nervously watching with popcorn in hand. 2029 Remains a mirage shimmering on the desert floor of delusion.

Tantrums, portraits, and poor habits

Elsewhere, Trump threw a tantrum over a portrait of himself commissioned without his approval – apparently, even the brushstrokes need presidential sign-off. Putin stepped in, replacing it with one of his own. Trump smiled. Crisis averted.

Meanwhile, he dubbed Pulitzer-winning journalist Maggie Haberman ‘Maggot’, proving once again that his emotional maturity remains on a permanent holiday.

And finally: apartheid nostalgia

To cap things off, Elon Mars’ father resurfaced in the headlines for reminiscing about a time when Black servants in his home were a ‘point of pride’. While we’re not experts in Earth’s ‘cancel culture’, we’re fairly certain this isn’t the flex he thinks it is.

Pro tip: if your past involves institutional oppression, maybe just stop talking.

Trump 2.0: the planetary disaster in progress

Trump 2.0 remains Earth’s most bewildering trainwreck. Not a fiery explosion of space debris – no, this is a man who inexplicably clings to power while careening through every norm of governance.

Secretary Hegseth, once again, merits a mention. Between calling Europe freeloaders and leaking military plans, his contribution to global security is best summed up as ‘bourbon-fuelled chaos’.

Meanwhile, Trump’s approach to diplomacy – DUI: Diplomacy Under the Influence – is wreaking economic havoc. A proposed 25% tariff on non-American cars could see Americans returning to horse-drawn transport.

And yes, he has somehow enraged an entire nation of penguins. A tariff on penguin-filled islands has left even us baffled. When you’ve alienated Canada and penguins, you may want to reassess your foreign policy strategy.

Reports suggest that Donald J. Trump, former steak salesman and part-time wrestling cameo, was a KGB asset in the 1980s under the codename ‘Krasnov’. Yes, while Earth’s citizens were distracted by perms and parachute trousers, your favourite chaos goblin may have been deep in a decades-long sleeper mission. Has he been activated? The evidence mounts: his overt love letters to Putin, and the inspired claim that Ukraine – not Russia – started their own invasion. Bravo.

Martian analysts are monitoring his Truth Social for coded signals, though frankly, the stream of gibberish could be anything from classified commands to indigestion. ‘Beautiful, tremendous, never been a bigger wall’ could mean ‘Launch the Nukes’ or simply that he’s reminiscing about concrete.

Meanwhile, Earth’s other favourite space-faring megalomaniac, Elon Musk, is doing his bit to ensure the planet’s imminent collapse. From micromanaging federal employees like a bored Roman emperor, to inventing the $1 government spending cap (ideal for purchasing half a Tic Tac), Musk seems determined to drag capitalism through a hedge – backwards – and straight into parody.

His idea of leadership? Barking ‘What did you do this week?’ at exhausted civil servants. Most are too polite to reply with ‘dealing with the consequences of your existence,’ but we Martians are under no such restrictions.

In conclusion: a planet on fire

In short, Earth – under Trump 2.0 – is spiralling. The economy teeters, political institutions crack, and diplomacy has been replaced by narcissistic absurdity. We Martians will continue to observe from a safe distance, popcorn in hand, ready for whatever unhinged episode comes next in this cosmic comedy of errors.
