I am an unwilling immigrant in this new country
Of tall tales, rampant untruths
That we used to acknowledge as lies
And rights that are somehow now wrongs
A place where all was once possible
And full of potential
Not backward-looking
And full of bile
Where acts of kindness
Go unnoticed
But acts of violence
Are amplified
And aggrandized
Hateful rhetoric shouted
Loud and proud
From once-hallowed halls
Yet my small voice
Joins with the growing chorus
As all around us
We will rise
We will vote
We will shine a light on the darkness
And bridge the great divide of hate
With love
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.”
Martin Luther King Jnr., Strength to Love, 1963
