Porridge, a much-loved classic British television classic is coming to the stage this spring as Individuality Productions presents the iconic comedy Porridge at Rainhill Village Hall.

Originally written by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, Porridge first appeared on the BBC in the 1970s and quickly became one of Britain’s most popular sitcoms. The series starred Ronnie Barker as the quick-witted prisoner Norman Stanley Fletcher, and followed life inside the fictional HMP Slade, where Fletcher navigates prison life alongside fellow inmate Godber while frequently clashing with the strict prison officer Mr Mackay and the kinder Mr Barraclough.

Porridge now adapted to theatre

Now the world of Slade Prison is being recreated on stage by Individuality Productions, a theatre company led by director Tony Dagnall and producer Sam Moores. The company is known for producing a variety of theatrical productions while also supporting young performers through its youth theatre programme.

Rehearsals for the production began last year and have been filled with laughter and energy as the cast bring the classic characters to life. The company promises audiences a nostalgic journey back to one of Britain’s most beloved sitcoms, while delivering a fresh and lively stage adaptation.

Rehearsals were such fun, the show will be a treat!

The production features Leslie Longley as Fletcher and Adam Murphy as Godber. Leslie Longley said of taking on the role:

“I can’t wait to play Fletcher. During rehearsals, we’ve had lots of fun trying not to laugh, but we’ve poured so much into bringing these iconic characters to life. Audiences are in for a treat!”

Kevin Thomas plays the formidable prison officer Mr Mackay. The role of Mr Barraclough is shared between Geoff Head and Terry Caddick. The colourful inmates of Slade Prison are brought to life by Adam Titchmarsh as “Horrible” Ives, Sam Bolton as Warren, Mike Sanders as McLaren, Terry James as Blanco, and Nathan Evans as Crusher.

Christopher Lee-Power appears in two roles in the production, playing both the intimidating prison inmate Grout and the prison doctor Jessel. Sam Moores also appears in the production as Ingrid, in addition to producing, overseeing costumes and sound. Lighting is by Les Dagnall.
