Cinderella with a twist
Liverpool, UK – Local writer and Lancaster resident Matt Sheffield is bringing an outrageous new twist to the classic Cinderella story with his adult comedy, Cinderella: After The Prince’s Ball(s). This raucous, laugh-out-loud production will be performed at the Hope Street Theatre in Liverpool from November 28th to 30th, 2024.
Comedy helped Matt Sheffield overcome mental health problems
Matt Sheffield is a playwright, screenwriter, ex-serviceman and former educator from Burnley.
He had a few challenging years battling addiction, mental health struggles, and serious physical injuries, but despite severe physical and mental health challenges, he has written over 30 short films, four feature-length screenplays, stage dramas, and musicals. Matt Sheffield has now found his voice in comedy, using his unique blend of humour and raw honesty to inspire and entertain.
Cinderella: After The Prince’s Ball(s) is his first stage production, blending his love of comedy with his drive to inspire others. It is a no holds-barred adult comedy that reimagines what really happens after Cinderella’s magical night at the ball. Filled with risqué humour and plenty of surprises, the show promises a night of entertainment unlike any other.
“This isn’t your family panto,” says Sheffield. “It’s a cheeky, irreverent take on the Cinderella story with a cast of characters who are, quite frankly, out of control. We’ve put a lot of heart into this show, and our cast is all local talent from the Merseyside area. I hope the audience has as much fun watching it as we’ve had making it.”
That Bunch Of Weirdos
The production features a talented cast of Merseyside actors and brings a fresh, gritty charm to the pantomime genre. The show is produced by Sheffield’s independent production company (That Bunch Of Weirdos), formed earlier this year. Though it’s a comedy at heart, After The Prince’s Ball(s) also reflects Sheffield’s personal journey of survival and renewal.

Having faced numerous struggles, including a life-altering rugby injury, addiction, and a mental health diagnosis, Sheffield credits his passion for writing and storytelling as a crucial part of his recovery. “Writing saved my life,” he says. “It helped me channel my pain and chaos into something that could make people laugh and maybe even think a little differently about the challenges they face.”
Addiction or mental health issues addressed
Beyond promoting the show, Sheffield hopes to use this platform to reach those battling addiction, mental health issues, or simply feeling stuck. “I want to show people that there’s a way out, that creativity and laughter can be a lifeline. If my story helps even one person feel less alone, it’s worth it,” he adds.
