A new support programme in Staghills and Edgeside has supported three residents into employment within its first two months, and has engaged more than 20 others in activities designed to build skills, confidence and wellbeing.

Rossendale Works programme

Rossendale Borough Council’s Rossendale Works programme was launched in mid-April 2026 with the aim of creating tailored employment, training and community support opportunities shaped by local people.

The programme brings together residents and community partners to tackle the barriers preventing people from accessing work or training. The sessions create welcoming, accessible opportunities to help individuals take their next steps towards employment.

Rossendale Works Programme Manager, Paul Beaucorn, said:

Rossendale Works is about creating opportunities that work for local people. By listening to residents and working alongside trusted community partners, we are helping people build confidence, develop new skills and access the support they need to become work ready, while improving their overall wellbeing.

The early results from Staghills and Edgeside are extremely positive, and we are excited to continue supporting more residents as the programme develops.

Participants express their feelings

One participant shared their experience:

I didn’t know where to start when looking for work, but Rossendale Works made it feel manageable. The sessions and support gave me the skills and motivation I needed, and I’ve now secured a job which is a massive step forward for me.

Alongside supporting residents into employment, the programme also focuses on improving confidence, health and wellbeing. Another participant explained:

It’s not just about finding work. The support has been amazing and it has made a real difference to my confidence and wellbeing.

The programme is supported through Pride in Place

Supported through Pride in Place, Rossendale Works has introduced a range of activities and engagement opportunities across Staghills and Edgeside, forming part of a wider programme to strengthen communities and support residents on their journey towards employment.

The programme’s early success has been driven by strong local partnerships and community trust. In Staghills, weekly football sessions are delivered in partnership with Lancashire Football Association to encourage physical activity and volunteering, helping participants gain valuable experience, develop confidence and build connections within their community.

Further employment support is provided by Jane Pallister from Bacup Borough FC, where residents can access back-to-work sessions, one-to-one guidance and practical insights into the workplace through links with local businesses.

At Newchurch Methodist Church, residents can take part in laptop-enabled workshops to develop digital skills and access the Learning Zone platform with dedicated support and guidance.

St Anne’s Church in Edgeside has become a welcoming community hub, hosting fitness sessions alongside advice, guidance and wider employment support. Supporting residents’ physical and mental wellbeing, Rossendale Leisure Trust is also providing participants with free gym memberships.

Helping individuals and communities

With three residents already moving into employment and more than 20 people actively participating in activities, training sessions and workshops, Rossendale Works continues to grow opportunities across Staghills and Edgeside.

By working collaboratively with residents and local partners, the programme is helping to create stronger, healthier and more connected communities while supporting people to achieve positive and sustainable outcomes.
