The Mass

The light of a single star guided us

night time sky above a hilly terrain, with one very bright light

Picture by Ioan-Dan Plesa, free to use

It was at midnight that we saw up high,

A tiny star, deep in the darkness twinkling,

So faint, then all at once it caught like kindling,

Burst into flame and spread across the sky,

And we all scrambled down the hillside, mingling,

Towards the valley, where the city lay,

Above us burned a sky as bright as day,

And filled with birdsong, like a choir singing,

We tore through brambles, squelched across a bog

Until we hit a path that curved around

A fallow pasture, in dispersing fog,

Our feet were once again on solid ground,

And there it was, a small lopsided shed,

Etched out dark against the glowing heaven,

And there we stopped, and there we stood, forgiven

And singing with the angels overhead
