The migration myth and the political con, how the UK climate crisis gets blamed on immigrants

In part two of our series on the climate crisis, we look at the climate migration myth and the political narrative that comes with it

A balding white man, holding a protest sign that says 'ISLAND OF STRANGERS' in red, stands next to a blond haired woman, both shoulders neep in water. The woman is pointing her finger and shouting accusingly at a dark-skinned man who is sitting in a red rubber dinghy, with a sleeping mother and child and another figure in the boat behind him. Flotsam and jetsam, including a rubber tyre, a globe, plastic bags, bottles, a front page of the Daily Mail and a copy of John Donne's poem No Man is an Island are floating in the water.

Dismantling the ‘Climate Inversion’ narrative

The fortress of stupid – why you can’t deport a flood

If you listen to the Home Secretary or any of the ‘Common Sense’ pundits currently occupying the radio waves, you would believe that the defining feature of the climate crisis is a flotilla of dinghies heading for the Kent coast. They have sold you a story that the Global South is packing its bags to move into your spare room. This is the ‘Lifeboat Narrative’, and it is designed to do one thing: make you so terrified of the desperate family on the news that you forget to look at the politicians who are currently dismantling your own flood defences. Our analysis proves that this invasion narrative is not just morally bankrupt; it is mathematically false. The data shows that displacement is not about people coming here to steal your GP appointment; it is about people moving five miles down the road because their farm has turned into a salt marsh.

Let’s look at the actual geography of displacement, because the numbers in the UNHCR reports are stubborn things that refuse to bend to editorial bias. The vast majority of people displaced by climate breakdown, specifically 75% of them, remain in low-to-middle-income countries. They do not cross continents; they barely cross borders. When a flood hits Pakistan, as it did in 2022 affecting 33 million people and displacing nearly 8 million, those families did not teleport to Dover. They moved from a submerged village in Sindh to a slum in Karachi. They moved from the rural fire zone to the urban heat island. This is Internal Displacement, and it is the dominant reality of the crisis. The narrative that the entire equatorial belt is marching north is a lie told by people who want to sell you a razor-wire fence. The reality is that most people do not want to leave their homes, their language, and their ancestors, and when they are forced to, they stay as close as they possibly can.

Busting the ‘Climate Invasion’ Myth, as most climate displacement stays local

Furthermore, the ‘Invasion’ myth relies on a fundamental misunderstanding of poverty. Migration is expensive. It requires capital, connections, and physical stamina. We have identified a terrifying category of people that the tabloids ignore: ‘Trapped Populations’. These are the people who are so impoverished by the initial climate shocks that they cannot move at all. When the crops fail three years in a row, you do not have the money to pay a smuggler; you do not even have the money for a bus ticket. These people are not ‘invading’ anywhere; they are being left to die in place. The idea that the world’s poorest are mobile enough to threaten ‘Fortress Europe’ is a logistical fantasy. We are demonising people who are literally too broke to escape the burning building.

Now consider the legal vacuum that the government is hiding behind. The 1951 Refugee Convention, the bedrock of international asylum law, was written for a world of Cold War dissidents, not a world of 50°C heatwaves. It defines a refugee as someone fleeing persecution based on race, religion, or political opinion. It does not recognise ‘physics’ as a persecutor. If a dictator threatens to shoot you, you have a claim. If a drought destroys your livelihood, you have nothing. There is no such thing as a ‘Climate Refugee’ visa. The government knows this. They know that the current international system is completely broken for the 21st century, but instead of trying to fix it or create safe legal pathways, they are using the ambiguity to criminalise survival. They are treating victims of a global atmospheric failure as if they are criminals breaking and entering, despite the fact that the UK’s historical emissions are part of the reason their homes are uninhabitable in the first place.

Weaponising the climate emergency – how politicians turn fear into border politics

This brings us to the darkest part of the political strategy, which we call ‘Eco-Bordering’. This is the pivot where the far-right stops denying climate change and starts weaponising it. You can see it happening in real-time. They have realised they can no longer claim the weather is normal, so they have switched tactics. Now they say, ‘Yes, the climate is breaking, and that is exactly why we need to pull up the drawbridge.’ They are using the fear of scarcity, the fear that there isn’t enough food, water, or housing, to justify a new form of green nationalism. They frame the refugee not as a human being in need of help, but as a resource competitor. It is a cynical trick to distract you from the fact that the scarcity is artificial. We have enough resources; we just have a distribution system that allows water companies to dump sewage while paying dividends, and energy companies to record record profits while grandmothers freeze.

The ‘Buffer-Cutters’ want you to believe that security comes from exclusion. They want you to think that if we just build the wall high enough, the water won’t get in. This is the logic of a toddler hiding under the duvet to stop the house from burning down. You cannot deport a hurricane. You cannot detain a crop failure. You cannot use Border Force to turn back a heatwave. The climate crisis is a global systemic failure, and no amount of razor wire in the Channel will stop the price of your bread going up when the harvest fails in Spain. The ‘Invasion’ is a ghost story. The real threat is the silence of the politicians who are watching the world burn and telling you to blame the people fleeing the flames.

The political con – blaming net zero while fossil gas drives energy bills

The most dangerous lie currently circulating in Westminster is not that climate change is a hoax, that is an old song for the stupid, but that the solution to climate change is the reason you are poor. This is the ‘Greenlash’. It is a calculated, well-funded political strategy identified as ‘Strategic Obstruction’, and its purpose is to make you fight the firefighter instead of the fire. The politicians pushing this narrative know exactly what they are doing. They have looked at the same terrifying data we have: the 1.45°C temperature rise, the collapsing insurance markets, the agricultural failures. But instead of fixing the roof, they have decided it is more profitable to sell you a gun to shoot your neighbour when the water comes in.

The cost of net zero myth – energy bills rose because fossil gas did

Let’s dismantle the ‘Cost of Net Zer’ lie, because it is the foundation of their entire operation. The ‘Buffer-Cutters’ will stand at the dispatch box and tell you that your energy bill is high because of ‘green levies’ and wind turbines. The receipts prove the exact opposite. The International Energy Agency and our own analysis confirm that the energy price spikes of the last three years were driven almost exclusively by the volatility of fossil gas markets. We are tethered to a dying, volatile commodity sold by dictators and cartels. If we had built the onshore wind and solar capacity that these same politicians blocked in 2015, British bills would be significantly lower today. They cut the green investment, kept us hooked on expensive gas, and then had the audacity to blame the ‘green agenda’ when the price exploded. It is like smashing your own boiler with a hammer and then blaming the plumber for the cold.

This brings us to the second mechanism of the con: Weaponised Scarcity.

Weaponising scarcity – blaming migrants for failing UK water and housing

The far-right has realised that fear is a better motivator than denial. Their new narrative, ‘Eco-Bordering’, is simple and evil: ‘The world is dying, resources are scarce, so we must close the doors to protect ‘our own’.’ You hear this in the rhetoric about ‘full up’ services and ‘swamped’ infrastructure. But the scarcity is artificial. We are not running out of water because of refugees; we are running out of water because the privatised water companies haven’t built a new reservoir since 1991 while leaking billions of litres a day. We are not running out of housing because of asylum seekers; we are running out of housing because we stopped building social homes and turned property into a speculative asset class. The ‘Eco-Nationalists’ use the migrant as a human shield to protect the failures of the state. They want you to look at the dinghy so you don’t look at the dividend payments.

Think tanks and fossil fuels: paid ‘climate scepticism’ in a suit

We must also confront the ‘Think Tank Ventriloquists’ operating in the shadows. These are the non-domiciled organisations operating out of Tufton Street and Washington, pumping ‘Strategic Obstruction’ points into the media bloodstream. They frame every attempt to clean the air or insulate your home as ‘tyranny’ or a ‘war on the motorist’. Why? Because their donors are the incumbents of the carbon economy. They are not defending your freedom; they are defending their clients’ right to extract the last few trillion dollars of value from the fossil fuel system before it collapses. They have successfully framed ‘pollution’ as ‘liberty’. It is a masterclass in gaslighting. They have convinced a segment of the population that dying of respiratory failure is a patriotic duty.

From governance to guard towers – how the UK climate crisis fuels authoritarian politics

Finally, look at the endgame of ‘Fortress Politics’. The warning signs point to a shift toward ‘authoritarian protectionism’. This is where the state gives up on solving the problem and focuses entirely on managing the consequences through force. We see the militarisation of borders, the criminalisation of protest, and the rollback of human rights laws like the ECHR. They are building a lifeboat for the rich and a police state for everyone else. They know they cannot deliver prosperity in a 2°C world, so they are preparing to deliver ‘order’ instead. But as we established in the previous analysis, you cannot shoot a heatwave. Authoritarianism is not a flood defence. You can have all the border guards in the world, but if the food supply chain from Spain snaps, the shelves in Tesco will still be empty.

The ‘Greenlash’ is not a defence of the working class. It is the strategy of a political class that has run out of ideas and is now trading in pure survivalism. They are picking your pocket while the hurricane approaches, betting that you will be too angry at the ‘woke mob’ or the ‘eco-zealots’ to notice that they are the ones who refused to board up the windows.

This was part two of a series examining the  catastrophic climate change we are facing. The next part will be out next week.

Part one: Are we in a climate dystopia, or just reading the small print of UK home insurance?

Part two: The migration myth and the political con, how the UK climate crisis gets blamed on immigrants

Part three: The endgame and the legal defence, billionaire bunkers, fortress politics and the ECHR

A set of white bowls tumbling over on a table. One, centre left is a dustbowl with dead treas and a tornado rising out of it that turns into hot air and a rain cloud, that rains down water into a bowl, centre right, that contains a skyscraper as seen in the centre of Swindon and an Amazon warehouse. Water and sand are spilling over the table, but the rest of the bowls are empty.
