While climate change is a point of focus for many of us, there’s still plenty that needs to be done to protect our planet. It may seem like a large feat, but there are steps you can take as an individual to create a positive, long-lasting impact.

Whether you’re keen on a green home revamp, want to have fun in a more planet-friendly way, or simply want to do more to advocate for the environment, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Make sustainable home upgrades

There are a variety of ways to make your home more sustainable – some are simple fixes, while others are bigger home upgrades. Changing the way you heat your home can have a significant impact on your property’s energy efficiency, reducing CO2 emissions and making for a more eco-friendly way of living.

Consider adding wall insulation, or draught-proofing your windows and doors to help keep your home warm and reduce your need to rely on unsustainable heating systems. Or, revamp your entire heating system altogether, by installing solar panels or using an air source heat pump. With 50.9% of the UK’s electricity having come from renewable sources in 2024, we are making progress – but we still have a long way to go.

In addition to upgrading your home heating system, you could look to make changes in other areas too. Save water by limiting your use wherever possible, consider purchasing a rainwater filtration system, and contribute to a circular economy by purchasing your furniture secondhand.

Choose environmentally-friendly travel options

Travel is a big contributor to global carbon emissions but there are actions you can take to lessen your impact, both when travelling long distances and on your day-to-day journeys. For example, consider cycling or walking to nearby places if you can, rather than taking the car – or, you could use public transport for locations that are a little further away. This will help to cut down on the CO2 emissions of your daily travel.

Rather than taking holidays abroad, you could instead opt to enjoy a staycation a little closer to home, to limit the emissions produced by flying. While sometimes you simply won’t have any other choice than to use a high carbon producing mode of transport, you can always take steps to make a more positive impact, such as by purchasing carbon offsets.

Spread the word

When it comes down to it, even just talking about climate change can help to spread awareness, and encourage others to live more sustainably. Equip yourself with facts and statistics about climate change to draw on when the moment strikes – sharing your knowledge is one of the most simple and effective ways to make a positive impact.

Remember to do what you can to live more sustainably, but don’t be too hard on yourself if some changes are out of your reach. Every endeavour, no matter how small, makes a difference. If we all put in the effort, they’ll accumulate to promote a more sustainable, eco-friendly future.
